Lombok SIM Card & eSIM Guide: How to Stay Connected on the Island
Stay connected in Lombok: compare tourist SIM cards, eSIMs, roaming, phone registration and practical internet tips for Kuta.

Overview
Quick answer: For a trip to Lombok, your main choices are a tourist physical SIM, an eSIM compatible with your phone, or international roaming. The best option depends on your phone, the length of your stay, the places you plan to visit and whether you need a local Indonesian number. Do not assume every eSIM sold online is a local Indonesian SIM: some are international data-only travel products, and the registration rules can differ.
It is worth sorting out connectivity before your first journey from the airport to Kuta. You may need mobile data to find your driver, share a location, contact your accommodation or translate a message. At Lombok Local, we think a good arrival starts with fewer small uncertainties — and with local people who can help when a plan changes.
What are the internet options in Lombok?
| Option | Useful for | Things to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesian tourist physical SIM | Travellers wanting local mobile data and potentially a local number | Passport/IMEI validation, official sales channel, package expiry, supported networks and actual activation |
| Indonesian operator eSIM | Compatible phones when the traveller qualifies for that operator's product | Foreign-customer eligibility, identity documents, supported device, activation requirements |
| International travel eSIM | Arriving with data already set up on an unlocked eSIM phone | Whether it is data-only, partner network, validity, hotspot allowance and refund rules |
| Home-provider international roaming | A short visit or backup connection | Country coverage, roaming charges, data limits and speed policies |
| Accommodation or café Wi-Fi | Downloads, video calls and work in a fixed place | Real performance, outages, upload speeds, backup power and privacy |
The practical solution for many travellers is one dependable mobile connection plus accommodation Wi-Fi. Remote workers may also want a second, independent backup. None of these options guarantees a signal in every bay, hillside or building.
Should you buy a SIM card before arriving or after landing?
If you want to message your driver immediately, it helps to have at least one connection that can work on arrival. This could be prearranged roaming or an international travel eSIM that has been correctly installed and activated according to its provider's instructions. Save the airport pickup details offline too: mobile coverage can fail at the least convenient moment.
Buying a local tourist SIM after arrival can make sense if you want a locally registered connection and help with setup. Use an official operator channel or an authorised retailer, ask the seller to explain the registration and package, and check that data actually works before leaving the counter.
For example, Telkomsel describes its Tourist Prepaid Card as a tourist-specific starter pack that can be ordered online and collected in Indonesia. Its FAQ also says tourist registration uses passport and IMEI information. Product availability, collection locations and the precise requirements should be confirmed on the operator's own site before your trip.
Do not rely on a shop sign, an online reseller's claim or a package screenshot alone. Ask what you are paying for, whether the plan is activated, and when the allowance expires. If someone wants to retain your passport or requests more personal information than seems necessary, ask the operator's official support channel to confirm the process.

Does an eSIM work in Lombok?
An eSIM is a digital mobile profile installed on a compatible phone; it is not a promise of better coverage. Your phone must support eSIM, be unlocked for the provider you choose, and be compatible with the product's activation requirements.
There are two important categories:
- Travel eSIMs sold for Indonesia may use a roaming arrangement with a local network. They are often convenient for data, but some do not include calls or a local Indonesian number.
- Local-operator eSIMs are products issued by Indonesian networks and can have their own identity-registration rules.
This distinction matters. Telkomsel's general eSIM information currently states that new prepaid eSIM numbers for foreign citizens require validation using a KITAS (limited stay permit), while its separately described tourist physical prepaid card uses passport and IMEI validation. That does not mean every short-term tourist can buy every local eSIM product with a passport. Check the precise product and current eligibility directly with the provider rather than assuming the terms are interchangeable.
Before paying for an eSIM, confirm whether your phone supports dual SIM, whether installation requires Wi-Fi, when the plan's validity clock starts, which network it uses, and whether you can tether a laptop. Keep the QR code or activation instructions somewhere accessible without internet.

What is IMEI registration, and do tourists need it?
An IMEI is a device identifier, not a mobile phone number. Indonesia has rules concerning the use of imported devices on domestic mobile networks. The answer depends on your status, device and how you connect.
Indonesian Customs explains that foreign visitors staying up to 90 days may register their device for local-network access through a mobile operator's visitor service. For longer stays, different Customs registration arrangements can apply. Customs also distinguishes international roaming using a foreign SIM from using an Indonesian SIM. These rules should be checked afresh before travel, especially if you plan to stay for months or bring more than one device.
A practical rule is: do not pay an unverified intermediary who promises to “unlock” your IMEI. Ask your chosen operator or Customs about the legitimate process. Keep your passport and device details secure and use official channels.

Will mobile data work at Kuta's beaches and surf spots?
Coverage is not uniform. Central Kuta, a remote villa, a coastal viewpoint and a boat-access surf break can behave very differently even when they appear close on a map. Buildings, terrain, weather, network load and the operator's infrastructure all affect real-world performance.
If you plan to visit Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak or other beaches outside the centre, download maps before leaving, save the address of your stay, and agree on a meeting point with your driver or instructor. Do not assume you will be able to call a ride or send a live location from every beach.

What about Wi-Fi at villas, homestays and cafés?
Wi-Fi is useful, but the phrase “fast Wi-Fi” in a listing is not a reliable performance specification. Before committing to a stay, especially if you work online, ask:
- Can the host share a recent speed test from the actual room rather than from a different building?
- What are the download, upload and latency figures? Video meetings and file uploads need more than a headline download number.
- Is the router shared with many rooms, and does the signal reach your desk or bedroom?
- How are power cuts or service interruptions handled?
- Can you use your phone as a hotspot if the fixed connection stops working?
- Is there a quiet table, a usable chair and access to a power outlet?
A speed test is only a snapshot; actual results vary by time of day and network demand. Ask about typical reliability, not just the best-ever result.
For accommodation options, compare villas in Kuta Lombok, homestays in Kuta Lombok and long-term rentals. We can help you ask hosts the right questions before you make a decision; availability and specific facilities always need confirmation.
How much mobile data should you buy?
Avoid treating a single number as universal. A traveller who mainly uses maps and messaging has different needs from someone who streams video, joins daily meetings or uploads large files.
Before buying, estimate your habits rather than trusting a “unlimited” headline:
- Light use: maps, messaging, booking confirmations and occasional browsing.
- Moderate use: social media, short videos, regular calls and photo backups.
- Heavy use: hotspotting a laptop, video conferencing, cloud synchronisation and large uploads.
Check the plan's fair-use policy, daily caps, throttling, expiry and hotspot rules. A large advertised allowance may still have conditions. If your itinerary changes or you extend your stay, find out whether top-ups can be purchased online or require a shop visit.
A five-minute arrival connectivity checklist
- Before departure, check that your phone is unlocked, supports your intended SIM/eSIM and has enough battery.
- Save your stay's address, booking confirmation and airport transfer details offline.
- Download an offline map of the airport, Kuta and the areas you plan to visit.
- If installing an eSIM, follow its provider's instructions before switching off your home connection.
- On arrival, confirm you can open a webpage and send a message before leaving the point of sale or airport Wi-Fi.
- If using two SIMs, check which line handles data and whether home-line roaming is disabled if you want to avoid charges.
- Save a backup contact method for your accommodation or driver.
These small steps matter most when you arrive late, are tired or are travelling with children.
If your SIM or eSIM does not work
Start with simple checks: is airplane mode off, is the correct data line selected, and is the plan activated? Restarting the phone may help after activation. Check the provider's instructions for network selection or access-point settings rather than copying random settings from forums.
If the issue persists, try a known working Wi-Fi network and contact the official seller or operator. Have the purchase receipt and relevant device information ready, but avoid sharing passport scans, IMEI details or QR activation codes in public chats. If you are at a rural location, test the connection in a different area before concluding that the SIM itself is defective.
When arranging transport or accommodation, a local contact can help coordinate practical next steps. Lombok Local is not a mobile operator and cannot guarantee signal, activation or network performance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a SIM card at Lombok airport?
Tourist SIM sales and pickup arrangements may be offered by operators, but counters and opening hours can change. Check an operator's official pickup locations and bring the required documents; keep a backup connection for arrival.
Is a tourist SIM or an eSIM better for Lombok?
Choose based on your phone and eligibility. A physical tourist SIM may be suitable when you want operator-assisted registration. An international travel eSIM can be convenient for data on arrival, but may not include a local number. A local-operator eSIM can have different registration requirements.
Do I need a passport to get a local tourist SIM?
Official tourist products can require passport and IMEI validation. Requirements vary by product and operator; verify the latest instructions before purchase.
Can I use my foreign phone with an Indonesian SIM?
Often yes, subject to compatibility and Indonesia's device registration rules. Visitors should check the operator's IMEI process; longer stays may involve different procedures.
Can I work remotely from Kuta Lombok using mobile data?
Some people use mobile hotspots as a backup, but coverage and reliability vary. For essential work, verify your accommodation's fixed connection, test mobile service and have a contingency plan.
Will I have reception at every Lombok beach?
No network can promise that. Download offline maps, arrange return transport and avoid relying on data in remote areas.
Can Lombok Local arrange my mobile plan?
You can ask us for practical local guidance, but SIM activation and registration must be handled through the relevant authorised provider. We do not claim to sell or activate a particular package.
